Why Today's Young Adults Are Freer than any Generation in American History
(Part Two):
1. We are free from
general social strife and the lockstep thinking of a mass movement.
We have no sense of a shared mission, no notion that we are a generation
chosen for some higher purpose--whether to save the world from tyranny
or to usher it into a new era of peace, love, and understanding.
2. We are freer from
ego-dampening hierarchies. We seldom find ourselves in situations where
we feel it is necessary to hold our tongues or give reverence to those
older or higher up the food chain. Our elders would call this disrespect,
and sometimes they're right.
3. We have the freedom
of time. Once you have children, you will know how true this is.
4. We are less bound
by the naked pursuit of money. For some of us money is plentiful and
for some of us it isn't, but for the most part lucre (filthy or otherwise)
doesn't seem to be much of a factor in our life choices.
5. We are free to live
our lives out of order. "The predictable sequence of education, stable
employment, marriage and parenthood that marked earlier cohorts of young
adults has given way to an increasing diversity of life paths," wrote
two Penn State professors in their book A Generation at Risk.
Women and men alike can delay marriage to pursue careers or delay careers
to travel or delay travel to pursue education. Or vice versa and the
other way around.
