Ethan's Top Five Reasons Why Cupid Still Has a Pulse
on College Campuses:
1. Although recent
surveys of college women have concluded that the dating climate has
turned bleak, evidence suggests that the shift has been one of style
more than substance. A whopping 88 percent reported being happy with
the social scenes at their colleges. And nearly all women--96 percent--felt
they had a clear sense of what they should and should not do in romantic
interactions.
2. Although the
term "hooking up," (i.e. a commitment-free sexual encounter)
has become popular on campuses, few women report doing it on a regular
basis. Sixty percent of those surveyed reported that they themselves
had never hooked up. And while that left a substantial 40 percent who
had, only 10 percent said they had done it more than six times. When
it comes to the ubiquity of hooking up, there is a lot more talk than
tango.
3. Boyfriend/girlfriend
bonds are still common in college life. Almost half of the women surveyed
reported having a boyfriend, and 24 percent of those said they had never
had sex.
4. Marriage is
in the minds of college women. Over half of all women surveyed reported
that they would like to meet their future husbands in college. Nearly
all said that being married someday was a "very important"
goal.
5. Despite the
"Coeds Gone Wild" videos, college women have not adopted as
their rallying cry, "like, carpe diem!" When surveyed,
nearly all understood that "the things I do in my relationship
today will affect my future marriage."
